School of Missionary Aviation Technology

Welcome to SMAT!

Our mission is to glorify God by providing professional aviation training to a high standard that equips individuals to serve God and others through aviation.

At the School of Missionary Aviation Technology [SMAT] we provide mission-driven students with FAA-certified training in aircraft maintenance and flight. SMAT offers a professional, certified curriculum in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Students benefit from small class sizes in which strong, lasting relationships are built with instructors and fellow students.

SMAT Community Day – June 19, 2021

Each June, the Ionia Airport comes alive during the School of Missionary Aviation Technology’s (SMAT) Community Day event. Offering rare opportunities for families such as facility tours, flight simulators and airplane rides are just some of the many reasons this event is loved by all ages. The event kicks off at 7:30AM with a 5K race on the airport, followed by an airplane fly-in and pancake breakfast, all day-long kids zone and door prize giveaways, leading up to the final event of the day – a live concert on the ramp!

New this year, SMAT has partnered with the Ionia Area Chamber of Commerce to a “Community Showcase” featuring local businesses and organizations. The showcase will run from 9am to 5pm and event organizers are planning space to accommodate between 60-80 vendors.

For more information or questions, email info@smat.edu or call 616-527-4160. All vendor information or questions email the Ionia Area Chamber of Commerce at info@ioniachamber.net or call 616-527-2560

Aviation Training Programs

We provide Christ-centered, performance-based training in aviation flight, maintenance, and related technical disciplines. Students receive hands-on experience in both laboratory and field environments.

Pete’s Story

This video gives you a quick look at the training Pete Young received at SMAT in preparation for a career change in which God led him and his family to serve with AIM Air in Africa.
